Geo Targeting

It's easy to find out the city and state from which your website visitor is coming from. Your IP address can be used to find out your city, state, country and a few other pieces of information about you.

What can do you do with this information? Well that depends on what you are aiming to do with your website, for e.g. if you're a restaurant chain and someone came to your website from a city in which you have a restaurant then it would be extremely useful to show them the phone number and address for that location instead of making them find a page to type in their details to find the nearest restaurant. I personally hate typing in Raleigh and selecting NC from a drop down on every single form I fill up on web sites when I know they can have that filled for me when I get to the form.

Anything you can do to help your website visitors get what they need faster would give you better chances of a conversion. Figuring out where they are from and how you can use that information to make their visit more useful would definitely increase your chances of success.
